PADI Divemaster Internship FAQ's:
How long does it take?
This depends on your current diving certification level. If you are a complete beginner and would like to start with the PADI Open Water Course then we advise allowing 2 months to complete the Divemaster internship. If you are already a certified PADI Rescue Diver then the the Divemaster can be completed in 6 weeks.
What is the best Thai visa to apply for?
This varies from time to time as the Thai embassies often change their minds on which is the best visa to apply for. At the moment we recommend applying for a 60-day tourist visa before traveling to Thailand. This visa can be extended a further 30 days in Koh Samui if required. This will give you plenty of time to complete your Divemaster internship.
How much should I budget per day?
This is down to your personal preference and lifestyle choice. It is possible to live comfortably on local ‘street-food’ and drink from the local supermarket with a budget of around 300 THB per day. However if you like the occasional night out then you’ll need to budget more. I think a good amount to allow for is 500 THB per day.
What is there to do when I’m not diving?
There’s plenty of activities and things to do when you’re not in the water. You can rent a scooter for around 200 THB per day and explore the islands bays, beaches and view-points. There’s also a mini-golf course, flying trapeze and rock-climbing available. You could enrol in a yoga class or try your hand at Thai cooking. You can also take a longtail taxi-boat over to Koh Nangyuan which is a collection of 3 small islands connected by a strip of beach.
What’s Koh Tao like at Night?
Koh Tao (particularly Sairee beach) comes alive at night. There are some great chilled bars located closed to DJL where you can grab a beanbag & a cocktail to watch the sunset. After sundown there’s an array of beach bars offering fire-shows, local DJ’s and cheap cocktails by the bucket. For those looking for a slightly more sophisticated evening there’s some great western restaurants and bars away from the madness of the beach.
Is there a chance of getting a job as a Divemaster after the course?
If you want to work, then yes! We offer a job placement scheme as part of our PADI Divemaster internship program. This means that once you have completed your diver training we will actively help you look for work here on Koh Tao. We have some great contacts on the island and our internship has a great reputation. There are a high number of diving schools here on Koh Tao so a large number of our interns go on to find Divemaster work on Koh Tao. We also employ from within here at DJL Diving, so if a position should arise then you will be first to be considered to work for us.
